Artist, curator, dramaturge, choreographer
She studied German, philosophy and political sciences in Heidelberg, followed by studies in dance and choreography in Amsterdam and NYC in the mid-eighties. As a freelance curator, choreographer, dramaturge and artistic co-director, Barbara Schmidt-Rohr has been responsible for the content of all productions and events of the Tanzinitiative Hamburg since 2002. She focuses on developing distinct performance formats and, by bringing together artists from various genres, consistently generates new forms of presentation in the field of choreography and performance. In her own work, she currently realizes productions at the intersection of choreography, scenic installation and the digital, with changing co-authors and teams. She combines digital themes with her own aesthetic signature, resulting in structures that are very close to fine art, video art and film. For years she has been dealing with the increasingly urgent ecological crises and also collaborates with children and young adults, whose fears and longings for the future are part of the works.
She is active on the board of the DfdK, a umbrella organization for the performing artists in Hamburg.
